His face changed then, his expression deepening. He seated himself in front of her, his knees tented. “Beneath that bonnet is a young girl longing to get out.”

She reached up, unthinking, and tightened the strings.

“I can see her face, how pretty it is, but am wondering why she’s so afraid of the rest of her being seen.”

Serefina wrapped one arm across her chest and clasped it over the other, stifling a shiver. He wouldn’t understand that he was the reason. To avoid the fires of hell, she must continually fight against her sinful nature, only by avoiding temptation could she remain pure, because she’d been particularly singled out. The only sign she needed of that truth was her hair.

Matthew sighed and hung his head. “Very well. Have it your way.” He straightened his legs and lay back on the compacted soil. “Think I’ll take a nap if you don’t mind.”

Still, she said nothing, but after he’d dozed off, stared at him longer than she had before. Surely, there was nothing wrong with looking at a man, so long as she made no attempt to go any further.

She curved one hand at her throat and counted the beats of her heart.
