She closed her eyes and whispered a prayer. Lord, protect me. Then raising the pot in one hand, she turned the knob.
Her eyes widened, and she dropped the pot on the floor with a clang. Throwing herself onto her knees, she lifted the head of the boy lying face down in the entrance. His skin burned. He was sick, very sick. In fact, he looked as if he hadn’t eaten for days.
She smoothed his hair from his face and startled at the resemblance. She’d only ever heard of him—stories, letters, anecdotes Anne shared of her family. They never came here, always Anne and Michael went to visit them. But it couldn’t be anyone else. It had to be him. Anne’s brother, Nick.
Her eyes widened still further, and she sat back on her heels. God had promised, and here was the answer. He was the man she had seen in her dream.
She stood to her feet and rolled him over onto his back. Hooking her arms beneath his shoulders, she tugged him through the door and into the foyer. She kicked the door closed, and as she did, he groaned.
Falling back to her knees, she cradled his head in her hands.
He opened his eyes and stared at her. “Anne?” His voice was faint.
She chewed on her lip. “Grace, and you’re Nick.”
He breathed out, the air emerging ragged and uneven. “Grace, I don’t … want … to … die.”
Her eyes moistened. “You won’t die, Nick. I’ll make sure.”
“Promise?” he said.
“I promise.”
