It was the thread of a tune, the barest melody made up of only a handful of notes, most of them elongated to three or four measures each. Unlike the sounds of the past, however, these didn’t ask to be played. They didn’t even repeat themselves. But rang once and were done.
Niccolo stared upward in the early dawn, wishing them back, and strangely, they reformed on his fingers. He felt the strings compress, his muscles flex with the draw of the bow, his spine bend and straighten in involuntary response. Longing swept upward. Longing to play again. Longing to write something different, something new.
Luciano had said it was possible – to ask and God would make him what he wanted to be. They’d prayed together, yet he hadn’t understood it, not really.
Only now, his fingers relaxing on the mattress, the notes fading from hearing, it made perfect sense. God would not be outperformed by the actions of a single man. All the knowledge and study someone could acquire, all the talent and training, years of concerts, were as dust. Useless. Nonexistent.
No, God wanted His tune to be foremost. He desired to be preeminent, so that no one else could claim they’d created it. Not the cacophony of notes twirling in his head, but deliberate tones, each given their perfect place and time.
Niccolo shoved the bed covers aside and left his bedroom, following the path of the hall to the master at the end. Without knocking or announcing his entrance, he opened the door and strolled over to the bed. He shook Giovanni awake.
Startled, Gio gave a grunt and rushed to a sitting position. “Nic?”
“I’m ready,” Niccolo said.

“Play It For Me” is the final book in the series but the most powerful, in my honest opinion. Tortured musician, Niccolo Cavatelli, comes from a powerful Italian family, who he doesn’t completely understand because their faith in a loving God doesn’t fit in with what he feels inside.
