Wings, The Set

Sara showed no sign of emotion on her face. He couldn’t decide if that was a cover for her thoughts or if she was still listening to the Creator speak. Her lack of any response, however, made Cindy angrier.

She pushed into Sara’s face. “What else can you do? Disappear? Cast a spell and you go up in a column of smoke?”

Angus reached for her, curling his hand over her sleeve. “Stop. Not here.” He spoke firm and gruff, but her resentment spiked.

Yanking free, she shoved him back, and his feet slipped on the pool coping, spiraling backward, he tumbled toward the pool. His mind whirled. At this distance, he’d hit his head, probably fall in as well, and unconscious, sink to the bottom. He prepared for the impact, his eyes squeezed shut, when nothing happened, opening them again, to see Sara hanging over top.

A deathly quiet claimed the crowd, and, Sara helping him upright, he scanned the line of frightened faces then dropped his gaze to his feet. His heart numbed, the beats chiming with no feeling at all. Water. There was nothing beneath him but water, only it bent beneath their weight and didn’t split.
